What is lllt laser?-The word LASER is the name of a device that projects coherent radiation in the visible, ultra-violet, or infra-red part of the electro-magnetic spectrum. It produces photons that are both monochromatic and in-phase. To put it simply, it produces light of one specific color that doesn’t scatter. The unique properties of coherence and monochromaticity are the key to why laser light is so effective compared to other kinds of light in pain reduction and healing. lllt laser, also known as phototherapy and low-level laser therapy, involves the application of low power laser light to injuries and lesions to speed healing and reduce pain. It is used to increase the speed, quality and strength of tissue repair, reduce inflammation, and give pain relief. Laser therapy has been found to offer superior healing and pain relieving effects compared to other electrotherapeutic modalities such as ultrasound, especially in chronic problems and in the early stages of acute injuries. Laser therapy is a complete system of treating muscle, tendon, ligament, connective tissue, bone, nerve, and dermal tissues in a non-invasive, drug-free modality.

How lllt laser work?

For low-power visible or near-infrared light to have an effect on a biologic system, the photon must be absorbed by electronic absorption bands belonging to a photon acceptor or chromophore (first law of photobiology) . A chromophore is a molecule (or portion of a molecule) which imparts a color to a compound (e.g. chlorophyll, hemoglobin, myoglobin, cytochrome c oxidase, other cytochromes, flavin, flavoproteins or porphyrins) . The “optical window” in a tissue describes a range of wavelengths where the penetration of light into tissue is maximized by employing red and near-infrared wavelengths . The optimum wavelength has been estimated to be around 810 nm. Mitochondria are “the cellular power plants” in our cells and as such they convert food molecules and oxygen into energy (ATP) by oxidative phosphorylation. It has been proposed that cytochrome c oxidase (COX) is the primary photo-acceptor for the red-NIR wavelength range in mammalian cells . Nitric oxide (NO) produced in mitochondria can inhibit respiration by binding to COX and displace oxygen especially in injured or hypoxic cells . It is proposed that lllt laser can photo-dissociate NO from COX and reverse the mitochondrial inhibition of respiration due to excessive NO binding . The process of light mediated vasodilation was first described by RF Furchgott in 1968, and his research on the biological properties of nitric oxide eventually led to the award of a Nobel Prize in 1998 . lllt laser is able to produce a shift in the overall cell redox potential in the direction of greater oxidation by increasing reactive oxygen species (ROS) and decreasing reactive nitrogen species (RNS). The long-term effects of lllt laser are thought to be due to the activation of various transcription factors by the immediate chemical signaling molecules produce from mitochondrial stimulation by lllt laser. The most important of these signaling molecules are thought to be ATP, cyclic-AMP, NO and ROS .

lllt laser at low doses has been shown to enhance cell proliferation of fibroblasts , keratinocytes, endothelial cells and lymphocytes . The mechanism of proliferation is thought to result from photo-stimulation of the mitochondria leading to activation of signaling pathways and up regulation of transcription factors eventually giving rise to increases in growth factors . lllt laser can enhance neovascularization, promote angiogenesis and increase collagen synthesis to aid in the healing of acute and chronic wounds . It has been observed in many studies, that lllt laser exhibits a biphasic dose response curve, where by lower doses of light are more effective than much higher doses. These low doses of light have demonstrated the ability to heal skin, nerves, tendons, cartilage and bones.

WHAT Effectiveness of lllt laser

For many years, doctors and physicians have been utilizing the benefits of cold laser therapy on patients seeking alternative and effective methods for pain relief. Over 2500 clinical studies have been published across the globe since 1967. Many of these studies are placebo controlled, double-blinded tests that have confirmed and demonstrated that cold laser therapy is a proven method for pain relief.

lllt laser hair

How is lllt laser hair supposed to work?-The hair growth cycle consists of three phases: growth (anagen phase), resting (telogen phase) and shedding (catagen phase). Hair loss in androgenetic alopecia depends on a testosterone derivative in the skin, dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Low level laser therapy is believed to increase blood flow in the scalp and stimulate metabolism in catagen or telogen follicles, resulting in the production of anagen hair. In theory:

The photons of light act on cytochrome C oxidase leading to the production of adenosine triphosphate (ATP). This is converted to cyclic AMP in the hair follicle cells, releasing energy and stimulating metabolic processes necessary for hair growth.
Release of nitric oxide from cells leads to increased vascularisation to the scalp distributing nutrients and oxygen to the hair roots.
Excessive build-up of DHT is prevented.

What lllt laser hair Can and Can’t Do for hair

lllt laser hair is highly effective at treating the weaker, thinner, wispier hair follicles, making the hair markedly thicker, stronger, and healthier. It’s also great at stopping hair loss in its tracks. lllt laser hair only works if there is an active hair follicle however, and it cannot cause hair growth in hair follicles that are already dead (areas on the scalp where there is no hair at all). Trying to use lllt laser hair in these areas is like trying to fertilize a garden that you forgot to plant – it simple won’t work (and no other medication or therapy will either). It is therefore best to start lllt laser hair as earlier as possible, in order to obtain maximum hair restoration benefits. Also, lllt laser hair can be effectively used by both men and women.

What You Need To Know Before Trying Low-Level Laser Therapy For Hair Loss

Problem #1: lllt laser hair Products Vary In Hair Regrowth Efficacy

There are three different kinds of laser therapy treatments:

Laser Combs. Hair combs with laser diodes built between the bristles. Use: any time, any place.
Personal Laser Helmets. Take-home laser diode helmets. Use: probably just your home.
In-Office Laser Helmets. In-house laser diode helmets. Use: only at a doctor’s office.

While these all use the same technology, I have significant reservations about laser combs.

The biggest problem is that there’s no easy way to track how long each part of your scalp has been exposed to the laser diode. Why? Because you’re combing your hair and moving the diodes the entire time. There’s no way to know if each part of your scalp is getting enough exposure for a theraputic effect.

The laser combs are also uncomfortable to use. And I’m speaking from personal experience. I bought a $300 laser comb back in 2009 and never liked using it. I feared damaging my eyes each time a laser diode flashed into my retina. After a few months (and no results), I put the comb in my closet and forgot about it.

So if you’re going to try laser therapy, I recommend that you should opt for a helmet over a comb. Doing so might cost more, but it’ll help you track scalp coverage and avoid eye injuries.

Problem #2: There Are No Laser Therapy-Hair Regrowth “Best Practices”

Of all the doctors that offer in-house laser treatments, none of them seem to agree on which settings are best for hair recovery.

I’m talking about session duration, session frequency, laser diode size, and wavelength (among others). Many doctors have different setups, and very few doctors share which settings work for their patients, and which settings don’t.

This makes it hard to find the “best” in-house lllt laser hair provider.
