The word LASER is the name of a device that projects coherent radiation in the visible, ultra-violet, or infra-red part of the electro-magnetic spectrum. It produces photons that are both monochromatic and in-phase.  To put it simply, it produces light of one specific color that doesn’t scatter.  The unique properties of coherence and monochromaticity are the key to why laser light is so effective compared to other kinds of light in pain reduction and healing. Cold laser therapy, also known as phototherapy and low-level laser therapy, involves the application of low power laser light to injuries and lesions to speed healing and reduce pain. It is used to increase the speed, quality and strength of tissue repair, reduce inflammation, and give pain relief. Laser therapy has been found to offer superior healing and pain relieving effects compared to other electrotherapeutic modalities such as ultrasound, especially in chronic problems and in the early stages of acute injuries. Laser therapy is a complete system of treating muscle, tendon, ligament, connective tissue, bone, nerve, and dermal tissues in a non-invasive, drug-free modality.

We have been using cold laser therapy in our clinic for a couple of years and continue to see great results for a wide range of conditions including back pain, neck pain, shoulder and knee injuries, bursitis, tennis and golfers elbow to name a few. A lot of people are asking “What is cold laser therapy?”  So here is a brief explanation.

It’s called cold laser because no heat is generated when the laser beam is pulsed. Another name for it is low level laser therapy (LLLT).  It was discovered that low level pulsed laser penetrated living tissue to a greater depth than continuous wave laser and produced no damaging heat.

In 1967 it was accidentally discovered that LLLT regrows hair and accelerates wound healing in mice. In 1979, Russian cosmonauts discovered that LLLT produced positive healing effects on human tissue.

Since then much research has taken place to show that low level laser activates the mitochondria of damaged cells to produce increased cellular energy (ATP), decreased inflammation and increased micro-circulation. These effects combine to produce the healing we observe while at the same time producing no adverse side effects.

Multi Radiance Medical launched in the USA in 2004. They combined low level super pulsed laser with an electro-magnetic field and infrared energy to have a more powerful effect. This is the type of laser therapy we use in our clinic. Strong levels of evidence exist for the use of LLLT for musculoskeletal pain, osteoarthritis, muscle trigger points, tissue repair and muscle fatigue. And just to confuse things a little, the accepted term in the research literature for this type of laser is photobiomodulation.

How laser lllt work?

Low-level lasers supply energy to the body in the form of non-thermal photons of light. Light is transmitted through the skin’s layers (the dermis, epidermis and the subcutaneous tissue or tissue fat under the skin) at all wavelengths in the visible range. However, light waves in the near infrared ranges penetrate the deepest of all light waves in the visible spectrum. When low level laser light waves penetrate deeply into the skin, they optimize the immune responses of our blood. This has both anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive effects. It is a scientific fact that light transmitted to the blood in this way has positive effective throughout the whole body, supplying vital oxygen and energy to every cell.

It uses a specific wavelength of light (red and near-infrared) to stimulate cell-regeneration, increase circulation, reduce swelling and arthritic pain. It is painless and completely non-invasive. The effects of it are cumulative, so with each treatment typically lasting just a few minutes, the benefits begin to be seen after the first few treatments.

Cold laser therapy is great to accelerate the healing of wounds or other injuries and to help reduce chronic pain from conditions like arthritis and spondylosis. Because it can do this, it can help to reduce the amount of pain medication your pet might need. This is great news because the long-term use of some medications can become taxing on the liver and kidneys, so this indirectly helps to keep them healthy too.
What to Expect

Your appointment for cold laser therapy will be quick and easy. People in the exam room should wear protective eyeware, which is provided. Then your vet or technician will turn on the K-Laser and run it back and forth along the part of the body that is being treated for a particular amount of time that your vet determines is optimal. Usually, the entire appointment takes just a few minutes.

Initially, you may have two or three appointments within a week, but as the cumulative effects of the laser being to work, the frequency is reduced. Usually, within a couple of weeks, you can expect to be seeing good improvement in your cat or dog! After that, it’s just maintenance. You may be able to come in for treatment as little as once per month.

How do I use Laser LLLT ?

Simple LLLT Treatment Technique

Example shown here is for a THOR LLLT system with 200mW laser probe and cluster probe.

Having thoroughly palpated and assessed the area, set the timer to 20 seconds
Set the Pulse frequency to one of the following settings:
2.5 Hz – for acute injuries;
5 KHz – for chronic injuries and non-healing or infected wounds.
Treat the top of the neck/occiput atlas for 20 seconds
Then treat the nerve exits at C7 / T1 for 20 seconds
Then treat the nerve root exit related to injury for 20 seconds, and continue to treat several points along the course of the nerve towards the injury at 20 second intervals.
Treat each tender point for 20 seconds with the THOR 200mW laser probe. Palpate for any changes (eg: reduction in pain, change in tissue texture, relaxation of muscle, etc). If there is no response, then treat the tender points again. Palpate for any changes and repeat once more if necessary.
Finally treat the surrounding soft tissue with the cluster probe for 2 mins per area

Times are approximate and can be varied according to the dept of the injury / build of the patient.

Be accurate during treatment, gapping and positioning joints appropriately to gain maximum exposure of the joint, treating ‘around’ tendons where possible and be as thorough as time permits. Use LLLT as soon as possible after injury, treating daily for acute conditions and less frequently as resolution occurs. Treat chronic inflammatory conditions twice weekly and osteo-arthritis weekly or fortnightly. Treat as many points as necessary during one session; do not move the probe during each application. Treat with single, then cluster probe during one session.

There are normally no adverse effects from LLLT, however, patients occasionally experience mild discomfort / ache after treatment. This is due to a restimulation of the inflammatory phase and should settle down after 24 – 48 hours.

Where need  laser lllt?

Cold laser therapy, also known as low level laser therapy, LLLT and therapeutic laser therapy is a treatment that uses a low-powered laser, that does not produce heat to treat conditions and injuries in animals of all kinds – dogs, cats, domestic pets, cows, horses and even humans.

Cold laser therapy is used to treat multiple ailments and injuries and is also beneficial to pets recovering from surgery. The treatment is particularly useful for animals that have a painful condition or injury. Treatable ailments include:

Joint, ligament or tendon injuries
Muscle sprains or strains
Skin lesions including wounds
Hematomas (swelling of blood in body tissue)
Post-trauma wounds
Post-surgical wounds
Nerve injury
